It was first implanted in 1995 and was designed for cementless fixation in indications such as osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis and early rheumatoid arthritis.
The spherical metacarpal shape provides near-to-normal movement in the MCP joint whilst maintaining contact area. The metacarpal head has a groove to help stabilise the extensor tendon and flats to accommodate the collateral ligaments.
The stem of both components is offset to the centre of the spherical head. The offset corresponds to the insertion points of the collateral ligaments and provides a stabilising action during flexion/extension.
The stem of the metacarpal and phalangeal components extend to the mid-shaft of the bones and both have flexible fins to protect the implant from mechanical loosening by absorbing lateral stresses. Sliding and rotation between the metacarpal head and UHMWPE plug reduces stress-transmission to the area of fixation.
